I now like the ones aged in wine casks. Glenmorangie has many different types too to try but all the ones mention so far are good to try.

??? I was under the mistaken impression that Glenfiddich was always a blend. That shit is a steal at ~$20 a fifth. A bit sweet for my usual taste, it does make a wonderful cocktail.

Dan, hit up some duty-free shop when you take a friend to the airport. Those prices are redonkulous. Oh, that's right; you live in Tony Blair's NannyWorld.

$20 a fifth?! That is a steal! I've always seen it in the mid $30s.

What he said, you can't go wrong, the cask Strength Laphroaig is so good, if you threw a bottle in the air, it would turn into sunshine.

c'mon junior, how the hell you live over there and you got no Scotch?
had a good convo about Single Malts with an Irishman in California last weekend.
He imparted this wisdom to me about the healing prowess of a good Scotch

Me: "No"

I have never seen or heard of a Glenfiddich blend, as far as I know they only make single malt...check the website...and please DO NOT MIX GLENFIDDICH!!!

Besides the very tasty 'fiddich, I would also recommend Glenmorangie the 10 year old is good, they also have some other interesting varieties like port wood finish. For a quality blend go for Dimple, so easy to drink! For a cheaper blend that is also suitable for mixing I drink Grants - it's made by the same guys who make Glenfiddich so it's decent stuff. Enjoy.

1. You're not American, so lose the ice
2. Never buy Johnie Walker Blue, USD180 for a shite blended Whisky? That's just crazy.
3. Laphroig, as suggested by Mayhem, is very good, if you like the peaty flavour. Personally it is not to my taste (I tend to go for Speyside or Highland malts), but that and Lagavulin are the Whiskys of choice for my Father.
4. No ice.
5. The Macallan is quite a nice introductory Whisky. The 18 year old is much better than the 12, the 24 is not a big enough improvement over the 18 for the price.
6. Find a good bar and experiment to find out what you like before commiting to a whole bottle. It will be fun.
7. Finally, never buy Chivas Royal Salute (I don't even think you can buy it in Britain anyway). It is crap blended Whisky made for export - US and Japan mostly. I still give Palinka shit for coming from the same place as this most lame of drinks.

i'm the same way with the no ice, unless i'm at a normal bar. since the best scotch most bars carry here is johnnie red, an ice cube or two is something i deem acceptable. however, any other time i can afford scotch or have it provided, no ice. but i am also in the market for a decent scotch. i need to find something for my dad to buy so we can drink it together...we've done glenfiddich and glenlivet...single malts are a plus...

Scotch...a beautiful dram but expensive. Deep, complex, reflective, and meditative. It is my drink of choice, but the great ones will cost you. It is best to drink alone, on a quite eve, in a large glass tumbler with may be one or two ice cubes.

The perfect pairing with a nice cigar.
