Tried Docs Cider last night at the Old Toad. It's a domestic, made in NY staate. It's replaced the ever-present Strongbow for a time. It sure is great. My favorite is the Woodchuck Dark and Dry. A buddy of mine just got back from Ireland, and he's jonesing for a Bolmer's, but we can't get it here. It's called Magnus in the US, but for some reason it's only available in NYCity.
Drink your fucking drink, how about that? Stop the fuckin' presses, isn't it genius??

Do you mean Magner's? I love that stuff, as well as the Woodchuck you mentioned.

I need to widen my cider horizons. All I ever see for sale locally is Hornsby's. The dryer varity is drinkable, but neither of them are much.
the best way to drink is by
yourself
in a small room
with the door closed
preferably at night.
you have the drink,
you have yourself.
lift that drink within the walls,
put it to your lips
and have it.
this is the
universe.

Mr Magner started making cider in Ireland sometime in the 30s. He joined forces with the English cider makers H.P Bulmer. At some point Mr Magner left this business leaving Bulmer to take over (Bulmers also make Strongbow and Scrumpy Jack by the way). In Ireland the drink just became known as Bulmers Original Irish Cider. In marketing the drink to other countries though, the drink was called Magners - partly to distinguish it as not just another English Bulmers product but an original Irish cider, but partly one suspects to honour the name of the original founder of the company. I for one love any cider from either country.

Another reason it was called a different name is because the Irish Government heavily taxes alcohol whereas the UK doesnt. A problem occured when Bulmers was available in both North (UK occupied) and Southern Ireland as the lads from the south used to load up their cars with Bulmers and bring it down south without paying tax. So it was called Magners when in the North and subsequently the rest of the UK. So if a police officer saw a car packed full of Magners he'd know it was being imported illegaly. or so rumour has it.....In the end its both the same drink and it tastes great in the morning!

I like Old Rosie, but that's pretty much it, though I've not tasted all that many kinds. Generic sweet alcopop cider is drinkable only when beer for some reason doesn't want to go down. Variety is good.
The last thing that anyone should ever do is feel ashamed of blacking out. You were trying to get drunk last night and, goddamnit, mission accomplished.

Fixed up some pork fried rice tonight. Opened the fridge and had to decide...lager or cider. Cider won. Yumm.

Mayhem is right, btw. Magnus is how we pronounce Magners.
