Yeah...I almost puked when I looked at the "Popcorn Sutton's" website. The man had his faults, was stubborn and unbending, but he lived true to his own ideals; finally becoming so despondent from constantly having to deal with other people's authority that he took his own life, rather than go to prison. And then here come the mass-marketing-minded ghouls, quite content to pick Popcorn's bones and trade off his name.Patchez wrote:I concur with the 100 proof basement for it. Having said that I took a quick peak at Popcorn Sutton's Tennessee White Whiskey. What I found was disturbing. Popcorn will get these money grubbing pricks back. When I heard they where going to put out his 'Shine legally, my first thought was, Christ, they corporate pigs are going to whore out Popcorn's name to sell shitty wannabe hooch.
Looking at the website, http://www.popcornsuttonswhiskey.com/, it comes in at 93 proof. Just under the threshold, and with some of the news stories on the page it looks over run with Nashville country music industry hipster twatbags.

Re: The White Dog Research/Collective MDF Hive Mind
TryBox New Make Series unaged Whiskey, coming in at a healthy 125 proof, courtesy of the Heaven Hill Distillery. It’s very strong, it doesn’t sneak up on you after the first sip like other White Whiskies, this let’s you know right away. It’s a tad bit peppery sweet, with a hint of rubbing alcohol ( I know, I know ) on the nose. You get big corn notes and yeah, gasoline, raw and unadulterated, it completely overpowers the barely there sweetness that is present - but gets eliminated quickly, with extreme prejudice.
I would buy this again, but with that said, this here bottle, is going to last a loooong time.

125 proof (62.5 abv)...now we're talking. Judging by Casino's tasting notes, this is a commercially available white whiskey that at least approaches the moonshine experience.TheBigCasino wrote:TryBox New Make Series unaged Whiskey, coming in at a healthy 125 proof, courtesy of the Heaven Hill Distillery. Most telling: if you go to the Trybox page of Heaven Hill's website, you will -- SURPRISE! -- not find the words "moonshine" or "shine" or see any over-the-top macho imagery used in an attempt to pimp this whiskey as being oh-so-risque, legal moonshine.

Apparently, all you gotta do to get in this game is find a source/partner with start-up cash so you can open a distillery.
First, distill some grain whiskey; conveniently (and most profitably) cutting out the time and storage expense of the aging process. Next, create a macho hillbilly-themed website, pose some ol' pappy geezer in a straw hat and overalls, give him a colorful bio and claim that you're using his family's centuries-old moonshine recipe and techniques. Finally, bottle your whiskey in a jug-shaped container with XX's all over the label and jack up the price so the suckers think they're getting something rare, exclusive and oh-so risqué.
And presto...you're a player in the white whiskey/"legal shine" craft distiller biz. Btw...it helps to get as many of the words "white", "shine", "dog", "moon", or "lightning" into your product's name as possible.
Extra points if you offer logo-festooned ball-caps, t-shirts, bandanas (all of them black w/ white lettering, natch) and maybe some 2oz shot glasses for sale.

I would encourage that as well. But I just gotta laugh at these triple-distilled, charcoal-filtered, 40% abv "legal moonshine" products now being pimped to the American market.Mr Boozificator wrote:I hear you Gene, but some Blanche and Calva are so delectable. there are two sides to that, this - or the young twenty something hipster whose starting a company like this, who hasn't been around whiskey all that much, no, I don't like them either, this leaves us with the big corporations (Buffalo Trace, etc..), between the two, I'll be with a corporation. they make damn fine whiskies and they don't need a hipster or a cash-flush investor to make things "go". Everybody's gotta make a buck, but in this instance, I'm siding with "the man".peetie44 wrote:Apparently, all you gotta do to get in this game is find a source/partner with start-up cash so you can open a distillery.

Re: The White Dog Research/Collective MDF Hive Mind
I hear you, TBC...both the Buffalo Trace and the Heaven's Hill offerings are un-aged versions of their normal whiskeys...and both are @62.5% abv (125 proof). Contrast that with most of these me-too "craft distiller" white whiskeys -- which are all under a safe and sane 47.5% abv (95 proof), while usually alluding to or implying that they are producing "legal moonshine" and/or following some deceased, real moonshiner's secret family recipe. A pox on their houses, I say.TheBigCasino wrote:there are two sides to that, this - or the young twenty something hipster whose starting a company like this, who hasn't been around whiskey all that much, no, I don't like them either, this leaves us with the big corporations (Buffalo Trace, etc..), between the two, I'll be with a corporation. they make damn fine whiskies and they don't need a hipster or a cash-flush investor to make things "go". Re: The White Dog Research/Collective MDF Hive Mind
For all of the reason's above, we have started this thread. The Buffalo Trace and the Heaven Hill's as well as the odd smaller distillery, such as Wasmund's, really anyone who is calling it what it is, raw spirits or the unaged product that becomes their respective beverages off beauty. Holy hell there is alot of shite being hyped. I suggest to anyone sampling raw spirits, a good rule of thumb would be to stick to stuff 55 - 60% ABV or over. That being said it sort of narrows my review work.

I noted the Buffalo Trace White Dog in the background there Big C. Have you had a chance to sample it? I'd like to hear another opinion of it especially from an aficionado of Whisk(e)y in all it's forms.

Re: The White Dog Research/Collective MDF Hive Mind
I just reread your recently bumped "trip to the candy store" thread and what really sticks out is that you bought TWO 750ml bottles (one of each) of the Wasmund's products for $21 and $23, respectively, making a total of $44 (plus sales tax, I presume?) for 1,500ml of whiskey. Plus, both of those spirits are a toe-curling 62% abv (124 proof).Patchez wrote:For all of the reason's above, we have started this thread. Contrast that to what an internet liquor seller, the one linked to the Original MOONSHINE company's website, is charging for ONE 750ml bottle of 40% abv (80 proof) white whiskey (to be fair, shipping is included in this price):

Even shipped that seems excessive unless it was headed overseas.

It's a bad price anywhere...because if there was an overseas market for this swill at such prices, Original MOONSHINE would've already found a willing importer.Patchez wrote:Even shipped that seems excessive unless it was headed overseas.
