Baltika 9 Strong Beer

Post by Badfellow »

Baltika 9 Strong Beer

ABV: 8%

Origin: Planet Russia

Available in 56 oz./1.6 liter PET plastic bottles
$2.79

If you've ever wondered how Russian bums spend their off hours when they aren't drinking bottom shelf state vodka professionally, just crack open the cap on a bottle of Baltika 9 and prepare to be transported to the land of casual, slobbering drunkenness. This beer pours pale gold with a rapidly dissipating head. Drinking it directly from the bottle, however, you will notice only that it tastes like a typical malt liquor/heavy lager with a bit of bitterness to cut the lingering sweetness. There is likewise a definite flavor of alcohol to help balance things out, though not as severe as one might expect from a Russian beer of such appreciable strength. Guzzling several bottles over a feast of enchiladas is a good recipe for a siesta.

Incidentally, Baltika 9 is part of the Carlsberg concern which includes such labels as Tuborg and Holsten. Corporate beer in general is quickly developing into the very model of new world order.

On the Upside
*Fantastic value
*Tolerable, some might even say enjoyable
*Large, plastic bottle kicks a 40's ass

On the Downside
*Not the best beer you will ever have
*Fellow drinkers may call you a Commie
*Drinking too much may provoke aggressive behavior with a compulsive need to invade the Crimean Peninsula

Bottom line: might as well give it a try.

Good news for you! Baltika 9 is available throughout most of North America. Just ask your local liquor store, or if they refuse to keep it in stock, you can always put on a tracksuit and threaten them with a Kalashnikov.

I for one can vouch for this beer, I've drank worse things from countries in the neighborhood.

Pairs very well ice cold vodka and salmon on a fine summer day or maybe I was just drunk.

Wouldn't pay real money for it though. But when it's dirt cheap, it's really decent bang for the buck if you're looking for a ride to Buzzolandia.
