Stan's on Vermont and 14th in DC. A glass of liquor with your mix on the side (martini's are pretty much doubles) no happy hour per say but the amount of booze you get more than makes up for it. They have food to but I've never ordered any.

I got a few.....

Liquor Lyles
2021 Hennepin Ave
Minneapolis, MN 55405-2742
Great drunkard spot....2 for 1 happy hour, nice atmosphere, a place that loves and respects the seriousness of drinking.

Darcy's
4804 N Lombard St
Portland, OR 97203
Open early and late, strong pours, great food. Al the bartender is riot, great place to get slammed. And you can smoke inside.

Tony's
1955 W Burnside St
Portland, OR
Great dive. Cheap smokes from the vending machine, lots of cheap whiskey and beer. Best shit hole in Portland, if you ask me.

1048 Jazz and Blues Club
1104 E. Fairview Ave
Montgomery, Al

My favorite hangout with I'm in Alabama. Great live music, from kick ass southern rock to more subtle blues and jazz. Kind of small inside, but a nice patio outside. Great selection of bottled beers, and decent stuff on tap. A lot of folks are enamored with the Jaeger dispensing machine, which actually works out because they seem very happy to get rid of the Beam and Cutty, and I happily oblige. Once again, you can smoke while you drink, too.

Oh, you asked for it:

Pilsner Inn: Active little neighborhood bar near the Castro district . Good beers, friendly barstaff, dimly lit backyard smoking area. It's near the Castro area, so gay men and women flock here; if you can't take it, go somewhere else.
225 Chruch St, San Francisco, CA, 94114

Whiskey Thieves (recently posted as one of my favorite bars in that forum): Whiskey bar with a great selection, friendly barkeeps, and free tastings! What more can be said? Pool table? Yes!
839 Geary St, San Francisco, CA, 94109

Edinburgh Castle: Dimly-lit bar with interesting beer selection and grumpy barstaff. "Interesting" neighborhood after dark, pool tables, and you can order the best fish n' chips in the city and have them delivered straight to your table.
950 Geary St, San Francisco, CA, 94109

Irish Bank: Irish-themed (read: FAKE) pub-bar with outdoor area for smoking, which is great, but no matter what you'll be rubbing elbows with older "sophisticates" smoking cigars and a little bridge and tunnel crowd. Beers and shots are tasty.
10 Mark Lane, San Francisco, CA, 94108

Zeitgeist: Hipster bar, good-ish, sometimes the beer might taste like soap. Huge backyard (there's no other word to describe it) area. If you're at least 30 the clientele might make you feel old, out of touch, superior, or all of the three.
199 Valencia, San Francisco, CA, 94103

The Mint: Awesome drunken karaoke. I don't believe that I need to say anything else.
1942 Market St, San Francisco, CA, 94102

Toronado: World-famous beer bar (they held a toast to beer legend Michael Jackson when he died and it was aired on his website) that serves many beers from many cultures. Absolutely packed day or night, but if you've never had that weird beer you've been looking for, you have to come here.
574 Haight St, San Francisco, CA, 94117

Elephant and Castle: I hate just the idea of corporate bars...but when I'm in the farthest reaches of North Beach this place is the only one with good beer AND good food.
424 Clay St, San Francisco, CA, 94111

Kilowatt: Used to be a cool biker-ish bar, but word has spread and now it's a crowded bar for the bridge and tunnel crowd. Still worth visiting for the vibe, though, even if for only a drink or three.
3160 16th St, San Francisco, CA, 94103

Tommy's Joynt: Big-slabs-of-beef-style sandwiches, German style, with an amazingly big beer selection. Visit during the daytime, because you don't want to be on Van Ness street after dark.
1101 Geary Blvd, San Francisco, CA, 94109

I think that you specified Irish pubs in your post, but I just had to give a shout-out to all of the good bars that I've been to in San Francisco. If you permit, I'll add a few bars from other neighboring cities as well.

Well, here goes nuthin'

Burke's Inn - more info »
25 E Eagle Rd, Havertown, PA
Great neighborhood place. Pool table, shuffleboard, correctly poured Guinness.

Rusty Nail Tavern - more info »
2580 Haverford Rd, Ardmore, PA
Dive on in. Two nice pool tables. Thursdays are Open Blues Jam Night. Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays feature original music, often of the very loud variety. There's always the back door.

Hykel's Bar & Grill - more info »
2704 E County Line Rd, Ardmore, PA
Good neighborhood place that still has that gritty shot-and-a-beer feel. But with good food and a lavishly rehabbed back room and outdoor deck.

Lamars Inn - more info »
1527 Cecil B Moore Ave, Philadelphia, PA
Remember that scene from Animal House at the Dexter Lakes Club? I got to know everybody there and was well received. I don't know what to tell you, however ...

McGlinchey's Bar & Grill - more info »
259 S 15th St, Philadelphia, PA
Oh man, what a dive! One of my most favorite bars of all time. The beer is cheap. The shots are cheap and if they like you, generous. The menu is simple: microwaved hotdogs, with a possibility of cheese or chili on top. And I just read two reviews, one by a Midwesterner complaining about rude and surly service, and another by a yuppie complaining that they still allow smoking. God, I love this place!

Ortlieb's Jazzhaus Inc - more info »
847 N 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA -
Where else would you go to listen to jazz in Philly? The beer is of the higher end, as are the prices; however, the food and the music are top notch.

South Philadelphia Tap Room - more info »
1509 Mifflin St, Philadelphia, PA
Top-shelf beer selection all the way out in the neighborhoods? Indeed. Worth the trip all the way down there.

Mill Creek Tavern - more info »
4200 Chester Ave, Philadelphia, PA
A combination of one-half friendly neighborhood hangout and the other half a very eclectic mix of live original music and dj-ing. Quite a cool place.

Standard Tap - more info »
901 N 2nd St, Philadelphia, PA
Don't let its Northern Liberties location fool you, this is a very friendly and unpretentious place to go have a drink. It boasts a very extensive taplist of exclusively local brews.

Druid's Keep - more info »
149 Brown St, Philadelphia, PA
Small corner bar that boasts a nice pool table and also foosball.

Green Room - more info »
1940 Green St, Philadelphia, PA
Half-decent neighborhood bar with two nice pool tables.

I have a couple to add in Michigan.

Mojo's Dueling Pianos Bar & Restaurant
180 Monroe Ave NW
Grand Rapids, MI 49503

It's a dueling Piano bar and they sing covers of songs in a funny way and the whole bar gets into it. Has a nice diverse group of people. The tired office workers, the skater, college kids just about everybody is there. The staff is awesome and the best part so are the drinks.

Mulligan's Pub
419 Norwood Ave SE
Grand Rapids, MI 49506

A Complete hole-in-the-wall....and I love it! Its dark, smokey and cheap and has a two pool tables in a to tight space which makes for interesting pool shots while trying not to take out people drinks that are 3 feet away make sure to order a Mulligan Stew...its a shot I don't know whats in it but you light it on fire and the drink the shot through a straw in one sip which doesnt seem safe at all.

This list comes from memory of dives I've played in over the last few years. I don't know drink prices b/c if you were playing, you got free booze. I guess the commentary is just on the vibe/mojo of the place and whether or not you'd want to sit down and spend a fews days of drinking there...

Union St. Station
http://www.unionstreetstation.net
117 S. Union
Traverse City MI 49684

vibe - tall tin ceilings, great jukebox, cool staff, wood floors, excellent beer selection

Viper Room
http://www.viperroom.com
8852 W. Sunset Blvd.
W. Hollywood CA 90069

vibe: cool little bar downstairs. couches, tunes, nice history.

El Carmen
8138 W. 3rd St.
Los Angeles CA 90048

vibe - had pre-show dinner and drinks at this place. tequila, dim red lights, paintings of 50's mexican wrestlers, black velvet paintings, and mounted bull heads. What's not to like......

Fontana's
http://www.fontanasnyc.com
105 Eldridge St.
NY, NY 10002

vibe - never a cover charge, open 2pm to 4am 7 days a week, total lack of pretense on the lower east side near chinatown, very large, red leather booths, the total package for late night boozing and good music

123 Pleasant St
http://www.123Pleasantstreet.com
123 Pleasant St
Morgantown WV

vibe- odd.... i remember wood floors, a long room, woodford reserve bourbon....not much else. We did a interview on U92, the campus radio station. I remember parts of that. then we were on the roof of a really old tall hotel building yelling at folks on the street below. then the gig at pleasant st. the band found me passed out behind my speaker cabinet after the show. very little recall of the night in question. must have been a good time.

Club Cafe'
http://www.clubcafelive.com
56-58 South 12th Street
Pittsburgh PA 15203

vibe - small, loud, cool green room up the back stairs, dark. We'd played a maximum security prison earlier that day. SCI-Fayette. I think it was in Pennsylvania. Not much drinking going on there, but as we left, the corrections officer said we looked thirsty and gave us directions down to some river near the prison, we had to drive onto a little boat which ferried us on a cable across the river. as soon as we exited the ferry, the CO said look to our right. "Oh's Tavern". The town might have had a population of 500. It looked like an old mill-town. We didn't play at Oh's Tavern, but when the 8 old timers at the bar saw us walk in to the bar in costumes ranging from elvis presely jailhouse rock to cowboy hats and boots, they got curious. When they found out we had played their prison, the old lady tending bar bought us a round of shots. We drank there for quite some time before heading to Pittsburgh for the Club Cafe' show. 5 of us did alot of damage in shots, beer and homemade chicken wings. I think the bill was $35. If anyone is from that area and knows what town I was in, Oh's Tavern ought to go on that list.... beautiful bar run by some of the nicest people. The 80 year old 96 lb dripping wet female fry cook delivered our wings and asked for a tour shirt. We autographed it and gave her a pair of our logo'd thongs as well. She winked and said she didn't wear any underwear....

Yo Rooster, I was just looking at this map, and I realized that I'm not the only person who has ever been to Elizabeth City, North Carolina. There is some seriously good barbeque down around those parts. I like Currituck Barbeque a lot. And there was like a "Dogs" place across from the Day's Inn I was at, "Tommy's Dogs" or "Tony's Dogs" or something of that sort. Bottled domestics and delicious bbq. I can dig it.
