My pub saved my life

Post by Buddhafella »

A sad tale to be sure...

At the demise of my marriage I moved and found myself starting life again somewhere new. With 6 pubs within a square mile of my new apartment I visited each one at least twice to sample their wares and make my decision.

The Fox Tavern was the clear winner. It was June 2006 and England was in the grip of World Cup fever. People sat outside in big foam hats bearing the flag of St George and, as we hadn’t been knocked out yet, everyone was in a good mood.

This was exactly what I needed. Plus, they were officially open until 2am (unofficially, they were open till dawn) seven days a week.

The way the staff greeted me moved swiftly through the following states;

Initially... “What can we get you?”
The following week... “Hi, what can we get you?”
One week later... “Vodka and coke?”
A few days after that... “We’re going out for a curry later, d’ya wanna come?”

It is fair to say that without this encouragement and fledgling friendship I would have gone with my original plan of lying in a foetal position on the floor of my apartment.

God Bless you all, and just one complaint, buy some decent Tequila - would it kill you?

Sounds like what happened to me after I was separated. Moved out on my own and discovered 14 bars within walking distance. I had been to a couple of them before once or twice, but I decided on the Old Toad, British Pub. Five years later I consider them family.
Drink your fucking drink, how about that? Stop the fuckin' presses, isn't it genius??

I calls a li'l spot called Legends in New City, NY (about a half an hour from the city) home. Known the owner since she beertended down the block, saving her pennies to own her own. Been 14 years and I gotta say, not that I haven't ventured from there just for somethin' different now and again, the convivial nature of the regulars, skill of the staff - both behind the bar and in the kitchen - and the over the top decor have kept me coming back.

And best of all - it's within walkin' distance of my humble abode.

I rarely go out. Home drinking is where it's at.

I'm right down the street from Elixir, and the Loop Lounge is at the corner, but just not in the mood.

Mine did too. 1.5 years ago I discovered a new bar in a neighborhood where I used to live and had just moved back to. It was the one thing that kept me from lying in the "fetal position". It did cause me to be in the "bowing position" several times in the bathroom though...

Went back tonight and found that it has saved a couple of other lives. Here is the sad note. One friend was 86'd and went into a downward spiral that he never pulled out of. This is not the bar's fault, but it is worth noting.

Thanks,

Jaime
