Social Clubs

Post by drunkspots »

I live in an area with a plethora of social clubs designated by fire companies and ethnic associations (mainly italian) that provide their members with extraordinary booze prices, 50c drafts, 1.00 shots, etc. Mainly men only joints comprised of older vets that have nothing else to do during the day. Get right with the bartenders (tipping a lot more than the cheap old guys) and u can tie a good one on for less than a happy meal. During these tough times i wouldnt know what to do with my drunken self without these joints, anyone else as priveledged?
beer, whiskey, repeat.

Always been curious as to drink prices in the Orange lodges, but still haven't mastered the handshake.

Don't think i'd be much welcome there, but I hear the booze is cheap.

I like the Timex Social Club, or at least that song "Rumors". I want to drink at a social club! There are tons of them in Boston. There's a Sons of Italy on every corner and plenty of Irish clubs. I'm half Frog Canuck, so I'm interested and a little scared by a place I saw the other day called the "French Club". It was a very run-down, scary looking place. It wasn't the giant, proud establishment that the Irish and Italians have constructed on nearly every corner of this fair city and urban sprawl. I'm a quarter Irish anyway, and I think that's all you need to be to join these clubs.

Went to the French American Victory Club's website. Shit looks pretty cool inside! With a name as dorky as that, I may have to join this shit.

When I was with Canned Heat (1975), we used to rehearse and store our gear at the "Topanga Corral" (on Topanga Cyn Blvd, Topanga Canyon). In exchange, we would do one or two benefits a month for various Canyon residents and causes. We did one for the local American Legion Post (can't remember the Post # -- 137 or 153, maybe?), which resulted in the band being given honorary-member status. Our principle privilege was being able to drink at the Post bar -- right up the road from Bob Hite's house (701 Topanga Cyn Blvd).

These are 1975-prices, but shots of Jack 90 or Grandad 100 were 25c and domestic 12oz bottles were 20c (there were NO imports). Draft beer was 10c for a 12oz glass.

Since I was crashing in his basement at the time, Bob and I drank at the Legion...a lot.

the VFW near downtown is an "open" bar, meaning anyone can come in and drink, unless they're having a function. yes, the prices are unbeatable unless you're drinking at home. the pool table is from the paleolithic, as are some of the patrons. actually, here there's a nice mix of old guys with great stories and young-uns trying to have some stories to tell in their old age. one of my favorite bars in town.

I hear the freemason clubhouse in my town has quite a selection of brandy!

There are plenty of places like that in France. In fact you can see them in any French movie, they're called brothels.

I was just invited to the "Fireman's Ball" in a hick town near me, so it's good to hear that this shit is cool because if I'm going to have to drive to a hick town and find a way back I need some free/cheap booze and no one acting like an asshat.

VFWs are awesome. The Brewster, MA VFW is great. Its huge and extremely cheap. My friends rent it out a couple times a year for crazy bashes. One time we had about 300 people there. We drank literally ALL the beer, and ALL the good booze. By the end of the night people were drinking Ginger Brandy and so on.
