New Bar
I'm going to Brisbane for three nights between Xmas & NY, & I just stumbled across this place. It looks expensive, but sometimes you've just gotta spoil yourself, & I dont think I've seen quite such a range of whiskies elsewhere.

Re: New Bar
Everything is expensive in Oz, but wages are relatively high so it evens out in most ways (with the notable exception being real estate, which is why I bought a house in a small town). When I said spoil myself, I didn't mean I feel comfortable paying more than $10 for a drink, but when you consider that it's $9 for a can of rum & cola at the pub, then paying $11 or 12 for some of those single malts sounds OK & the Rittenhouse 100 Rye seems attractively priced. Also keen to see what boilermakers they're offering & whether there're some deals to be had there.

Re: New Bar
I grew up in NZ, came here as an adult. I still support the All Blacks, but my kids were born here so I guess they'll grow up as Aussies. Never been to Tassie. I think it's like an Aussie version of Alaska.it even comes with it's own version of Sarah Palin - Senator Jaqui Lambie. NZ is good if you like outdoor sports, scenery & friendly people, not so good if you're into shopping, clubs & beaches. Both countries have lots of vinyards.

Re: New Bar
If you're talking about the beer prices you're not wrong. If you're thinking "I can get some of those bourbons or ryes for $3 at my local", you're missing the point. Most Aussie bottle shops don't sell rye at all. As I've mentioned before, $7 is a standard price for Johnnie Walker Red, so offering a half dozen different ryes for $9? Sounds good to me. Maybe the place is aimed at Mad Men fans, but that menu looks like it's been put together by someone with a passion for whisky. I wouldnt get drunk in the joint, but I'm prepared to share their passion for a drink or three.JimLahey wrote:They can go blow themselves for those prices.
Re: New Bar
The Catcher in the Rye or the Fire and Brimstone looks to be pretty good deals as well.

Re: New Bar
I'd say you have a good perspective on booze prices - not blind drunkenly paying whatever, knowing what stuff costs and that sometimes premiums must be paid - willingly.
So happy casual bingering and try some new things. (seque to my fave binge drink joke - "So I see a dvd at my local (library) titled 'Binge Drinking' - the library should return it and get their/my/public's money back because of the minimal "how to" content.")
As a comparison point - the prices in your example would be considered reasonable and even low in some Las Vegas strip bars. Prices are insultingly high here now IMHO.
(and how about Icelandic booze prices...)
Happy Drinking and the New Year.

Re: New Bar
As it happens I didn't end up making it to this place. My first night in town was Sunday so wasn't open, next night I thought "I can always go tomorrow" & the last night I started drinking in the afternoon (well, morning if truth be told, but more heavily in the afternoon) & when I remembered about that bar at around 8pm I was already smashed & figured it was a waste of time paying for good whisky I wouldn't remember. Going back up again in a month so will be more organised & present myself at 5pm sharp undrunk & ready.
Did find another place though, they had a nice selection of whisky, not as extensive but tried something called Pig's Nose or Snout or something, apparently an independent US whiskey. Nice enough. Also house pours for $4 on Sundays & good range of tap beer.

Try and take some pictures, when you finally make it to the aforementioned bar. It's always nice to see other people's watering holes.

Re: New Bar
Well, made it. Didn't take the camera, but maybe next time. Because there will be a next time, I decided the following morning. Only had three whiskys n because it started bucketing had a craft beer too. Started with a Rittenhouse rye which was everything I hoped for n at 50% made my lips numb in a pleasant way. I then impulsively ordered a Chivas Regal because it was also a house pour. Never had it, never been tempted to before. Possibly never will again if I have to pay n there's a choice between anything else but Johnny Red. Bland, inoffensive, instantly forgettable. I followed with an Islay malt with my Lone Pines Pale Ale or whatever it was. Figured you can't go wrong with Islay. Figured wrong. Ordered a Bruichladdie (sp?) classic. I'd been wary of its' newfangled label n turns out was right to be. None of the smokiness you'd expect. Well, maybe not none, but not much. Still, great decor (old bank), great selection, I just made a couple poor choices.

That's what it's about Casual. Try everything that strikes you at the time. You can't make an informed choice without being informed. It's like Boozimon, gotta try 'em all!
