did some drinking there, but mostly on the company dime. recomend a bar on the wharf called pier 23, i think it was. none too pricey, good food, and lot of pictures of naked ladies on the walls.

Thanks guys for the recommendations. Had an amazing time down there.

Yeah, did the chowder in a bread bowl thing and went to The Vesuvio (Kerouac fan, touristy yes). GREAT call from FNZ about the Scottish shop.

Went past a place on Sutter Street and saw some kilts and stuff in the window so figured that this was the place. Went in and bought the below bottle of single malt which I plan to give to a friend of mine here who appreciates his Scotch.

Did most of my drinking around Nob Hill and Union Square. Few dive bars in Tenderloin too which was sketchy. Gotta love the $1.95 happy hour beers at the place near my hotel - good warm up material. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was good.

Anyway, thanks again and this is also what's great about the MDM board - where else can you get booze-specific travel advice?!

So you went to Lefty's? It's full of tourists all the time but a good baseball bar nonetheless.

Ah, San Fran... ok, quick story--

My senior year in college I somehow got a paper accepted into a national conference that was being held in San Fran that year. Even more impressive, I got my school to pay for my flight out, hotel, and meals. I stayed in downtown San Fran for 5 days, ate cheaply at carts and taco stands nearly the whole time, and submitted my bar tabs as my meals, and the college payed for them! Haha, it was glorious.

Anyways, here's the great drunkard story-- One night, I really got into my cups, and wandered into an apparently "famous" San Fran 24 hour diner at about 3am. Being a good drunkard, my backup flask was still close to full, so I figured it would be ok to order a pancake breakfast and glass of water. I proceeded to take the glass of water to the men's room, chug it, and cover the rocks in flask whiskey. So far, so good.

As I went back to the counter with my now delicious drink, I could see my pancakes being placed on the plate. It was then that the host/matre'd/etc came over to me and politely asked what I was drinking. Ruh-Roh.

I calmly responded ginger ale, and thought I was home free, untill he explained that they didn't serve ginger ale at this establishment. After arguing back and forth, I finally blamed his diner for serving me whiskey when I clearly ordered ginger ale. He then told me I could either leave, or he would be forced to call the police. I explained I just wanted my pancakes and would eat peacefully. No dice. He repeated his leave-or-cops ultimatum and made the mistake to reach for my glass.

Looking back, I wouldn't have done anything different... I grabbed the glass out of his hand, chugged it down, slammed it on the counter, and walked toward the door screaming that he was a Nazi. I saw him pick up the phone, and as he started dialing the cops, I screamed at the top of my lungs, in my best NWA accent (I was a NY boy in California after all), "MOTHAFUCK THE POLICE!!"

I then proceeded to run for my life down sideroads, alleys, and whatnot, until I came across a Denny's, in which I hid out and finally had my damn pancakes.
Can I pour you a beer, Mr. Peterson?
A little early isn't it, Woody?
For a beer?
No, for stupid questions...

Not to be a prude. Well ok, I will be. I work in the City 2-3 times a week. I really don't like it. I've had family members who've lived there from about 1880 to 1940. I think it's pretentious and full of itself and dirtier than it needs to be. But for the life of me I can't stand the term 'San Fran'. It's worse than "Frisco".

It's usually attributed to folks (young men in their early to mid 20's) from San Jose or Sacramento (or "Sac" as they like to say which makes mine rise up in cringe worthy protest). I'm not saying I'm in love with the place yet I can't stand the term "San Fran".

With all due respect to the great writer and drinker Herb Caen.

What are a few of your favorite San Francisco bars?

Mine would include; Spec's Vesuvio Cafe, and The Saloon, all in North Beach, hell every bar in North Beach is good
