Well, I do like Steve Earle but the rest leaves me cold.

Ray Wylie Hubbard, Band of Heathens, Steve Earle, Old Crow Medicine Show are some of the seed artist for my Pandora Station called Drinkers, Drifters and Grifters.
So yeah, I have to agree with oggar on this one.

Re: Alt Country
I really love "Johnny Come Lately" by Steve Earle and The Pogues.
I do like some of the others mentioned, but they have very bad memory associations for me.

Re: Alt Country
Very nice Patchez, very nice.
Also reminds me of another tune
"It's Not a Battle It's A War" by White Iron Band - "All them late nights and bright lights, them hard headed dirty fights. You woke up in the morning feeling sore..... Everybody's saying it's a battle with the bottle but you know it's not a battle it's a war."

Re: Alt Country
Your last quote reminded me of a song by an alt country star before there was alt country. Back then they were just outlaws. Waylon Jennings, Honky Tonk Heroes-
"Them neon light nights, couldn't stay out of fights
Them keep a-haunting me in memories
There's one in every crowd
for crying out loud
Why was it always turning out be me"
Later in the chorus.....
"There weren't another other way to be
For loveable losers, no account boozers
And honky tonk heroes like me"

Re: Alt Country
If you ever heard the White Iron Band, I guarantee they would reming you of the old outlaw country guys. If you've got Spotify on your computer look them up. One of their songs is about the time they were supposed to play with Willie Nelson and he cancelled (due to illness as I recall). They wrote a song called "Willie Nelson You Ruined My Life"- it'll make you chuckle. My favorite album by them is 3rd Rate Country Stars.

Re: Alt Country
Now I'm going to throw in a few old country songs.
"Drowning My Blues" by Forester & French (although I like the Tom T. Hall version)- "I'm sitting on a barstool in the corner, and what I'm doing isn't very bright..."
"The Winner" by Bobby Bare - "But I'd had myself about five too many...."
"I'm Gonna Hire a Wino to Decorate Our Home" by David Frizzell - "We'll take out the dining room table and put a bar along that wall and a neon sign will point the way to our bathroom down the hall."
"Pass the Booze" by Ernest Tubbs- "Put the bottle on the bar where I can pet it. And take my address down before I forget it,"
"The Lord Knows I'm Drinking" by Cal Smith- "And we don't need no sermon, you self-righteous woman, just let us be."
"The Best of All Possible Worlds" by Kris Kristofferson- "...but when I tipped my bottle back I smacked into a cop I didn't see."

Re: Alt Country
I will double down on the DBT's Women Without Whiskey. BAM! "It don't make you do a thing it just lets you" ending with "Women without whiskey, Women without whiskey
Whiskey is hard to beat". Those guys (Patterson & Cooley) come up with some of the best one liners that pack a powerful punch.
