Route or Route?

Post by steved2112 »

When I say "route" on the phone at work, I often have to repeat myself, so it rhymes with "out." Normally, in my accent, it rhymes with "boot." Out of staters often don't get the word that way. Which is the more common pronounciation?

I think "root" means something "naughty" down under. (where?)
+ or -, you decide.

I actually pronounce it both ways depending what I'm talking about.

I say paper route (rhymes with "out"), but I also say Go about 20 miles down Route 101 (rhymes with "boot").
I'm not so think as you drunk I am.

Same for me. When talking about a street it rhymes with boot. When I'm talking about the Steelers blowing out the Browns it rhymes with out.
I'll miss you, pallie.

I think I can speak for all English people when I say we rhyme it with boot.

After a wee bit of research, it turns out that "rout" is the US pronunication and "root" is the UK pronunciation. But then, it is "root" 66 in the song, isn't it?

I wonder if root/ra-out has any bearing on "About" US vs "Aboot" Canadian style.

My uncle's Canadian and I've never heard him say 'aboot'. Is this just a myth perpetuated by South Park?

He does say 'eh' a lot though.

My grandma was Canadian, and she always said "aboat".

Yeah I'm with you there, upon further consideration. As a noun, it's always "root," but as a verb it's "rowt."

So I get my kicks on root 66, and also I rowt plasma from the warp manifold to the deflector array's induction coils if I am trying to countermand a tractor beam from the future, for example.
