So, car buying time.

That's right. You can put them right here.

So, car buying time.

Post by TheBigCasino »

So, the time has come to buy a new vehicle. I want this...

but, as location would have it, this is entirely impractical, why? Snow, kid(s), dirt roads - and not your easy drive dirt roads, these roads make the Dukes of Hazard look like the autobahn.

Yes, I have to buy a pick up. OK, shut up, I know, I'm not a pick up guy, but it is what it is.... I've narrowed it down to two.

Ford F-150. Ford Fix Or Repair Daily yadda yadda, I drive a Ford everyday at work in temperatures most of you have only seen on the weather channel, through pursuits, hard acceleration and suddon stops, turning off and on, it's never failed me, be it a 5 hour road trip across the desert, or a 5 minute jaunt in town, the shit has proven itself reliable.
Here we go
Image

Second choice, which is a dark horse as I have no real experience with Dodge trucks, drove one, maybe twice - ever. But it is relatively inexpensive. From what I've seen, and I'm on the road a lot, I've never seen any broken down - the earlier series that is. and I'm on the road A LOT. So this has joined the fray.
Image

There's nothing wrong with pick-ups, I'm just not a pick-up guy, family and environment have decided otherwise. So the Caddy's and the 300's will have to wait. But that's OK, I got time baby.

what say you, F-150 or the Magnum? If you had to pick one. and why. I'll throw that in too.
BMMS is wrong.

F-150's are great, that's my vote. There's a reason they're the #1 selling vehicle in America right now.

that's where I'm leaning, but the Dodge doesn't seem like a slouch - with that said, I have no substantial wheel time in one.

I have a lot of experience with all of this. I've been driving all three USA products for years. Like everything else one year this is a good one and that one is shit. Then it changes but some things are fairly stable.

GM products give the nicest ride. Real smooth.
Chrysler products are weird. Ok ride, widely vary in styling, never consistant.
Ford products, the toughest...and ride like it.

So I understand the new Fords have independent suspension which I've not experienced. They hold their resale better and at this moment in time (not like the 90's) seem to be better built.

I like the styling of the Dodges. But I feel funny putting too much faith in government owned companies at the moment due to so much uncertainy.

Now...to be fair...I'm from a Ford family on my side and my wife's but I still contend for long distance driving GM wins....specifically Chevy.

Don't believe me? Believe this old Texan I met while holding up a bar wall on the sidewalk on Bourbon Street.

Me: "Where you from?"
Him: "Abilene Texas."
Me: "Ok, I know the answer but I have to ask....what kind of pickup you drive?"
Him: "I've got two. The Chevy is my daily driver....long stretches of road in Texas. But I have a Ford I use for heavy ranch work."

My vote. F250...don't fuck around if you're going to go truck go 3/4 ton. You still get the crew cab but a full length bed as well. That said, I love my '01 F150 CrewCab Lariat 4 x 4. You've ridden in it.

I drove the decedent's enormous Dodge something in Colorado a few times. I felt like the king of the road. I have nothing useful to add.

It was a euphemism for his nuts. Driving a truck makes them bigger.

TBC..

I've driven all across America a zillion times; my own van; buddies' vans; rental vehicles of every description and parentage; pick-ups, cars, busses, what have you...

Go with the Ford truck...and if you're doing as much driving as I believe(?) you are, spend a bit $$ more and buy the F-250 (you'll thank me later).

I drove a F-150 for awhile. Great truck for the most part but the transmission gave me a lot of grief. Rebuild at 90,000 miles. Started failing again at around 130,000 so I traded her in for a Jeep. If not for the transmission I would have driven that thing forever.

Fords, Chevy, Toyota, Dodge. I've had them all.

I say Dodge. I still have one and it has given me the least headaches.

The final analysis should be in the test drive. Whatever feels best to you is what you should buy because you can get a turd no matter what you buy.

go with the ford, no question in my mind about it. i used to sell alot of them, and i worked on a GM lot. Seems the dodge stuff had alot of problems around 100,000 miles, mostly transmission stuff. Of course, i've been out of the game for a long time, that may not be an issue anymore.

F-150 it is, thank you gentlemen. I'm probably going to go used, as I'm not too big a fan of the new 150's styling. Everything looks great, except for the tail lights.

If you're going used find a Carmax. I just bought from them. Good prices, they'll buy any car you have to trade in and the financing is done in house so everything goes a lot faster.
