Hair Metal and Classic Rock

Post by steved2112 »

A few years ago I caught a local cover band, and I was amazed at how tight and solid they were. They played Queensrÿche, Zeppelin, Journey, Judas Priest... a bunch of staples from my music collection. And kicked ass at all of it.

I have seen them a few more times, and become friendly with them. A week ago they called me because their bassist is out of town for a bar gig.

So tonight I'm filling in with this band on bass, and we're going to rock like it's 1989.

Drinks to follow.

Rawk!

Text message just now transmitted to Jimmy the singer:
I just got loaded in. Should I wait for you guys or bust a killer bass solo while everybody's into the Flyers? I think I know the answer...

Act like John Paul Jones and go revolutionary naval on their asses with your bass!

Jimmy is my Shepard, I shall not want
He makes me lay down wicked bass lines,
He leads me beside still waters;
He restores my rockin' soul.
He leads me in paths of metal righteousness
for His name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death known as The Valley of Brittany Spears,
I fear no evil; for You are with me;
Your SM58 and Your mic stand covered in Steve Tyler scarves, they comfort me.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the
Rock forever.
fuck em man, it ain't easy walkin the righteous path.

Nah - just random silliness between the singer and me.

The real story is that this Bourbon I'm sipping was paid for using proceeds from the gig. Booze earned by rocking is extra delicious.

I once fixed a guitar for a doctor, as payment for services. We both thought it worked out marvelously.

Three sets. 21:30 til 1:ish. Standard bar gig format. The band's setlist is comprised of lots of Motley Crue type stuff. Some heavier stuff like Megadeth, and some hairyer stuff like Bon Jovi. A few beer rock favorites like Aerosmith and ZZ Top for good measure. Their singer is a force. He can actually pull it off. Say what you want about the 80s metal bands - they all had freak-of-nature singers.

A highlight (apart from the aforementioned subsequent booze investment) was when the girlie (who fronts my main band) joined us on bass for Rock You Like A Hurricane. I know what you're thinking: "but steve, wasn't the whole purpose of your being there to play bass?" Exactly. So I jumped behind the drums for that one. It was pretty funny. And rocking.

Great story! Thanks man. Scorpions are under rated, in my book. Speaking of the 80's, the best line I have ever heard sung is this: "You're just a picture, you're an image caught in time."

Always good to play and get paid, and drink your pay, indeed. Rock on young man

No matter the musical genre, I've always had the utmost respect for a good cover band. In the old days (1970s), when I was on the road with Canned Heat, we'd usually stay at Holiday Inns. And most of them, if they had a nightclub, had a good cover band performing. Usually 6-8 pieces -- plus a girl singer -- and everyone doubling on several instruments to cover all the bases. A new song would hit the radio one week and by the next week, a good cover band had it in their repertoire. Everything from '50s R&R to R&B to Metal to C&W...one band could cover it all and do it like the record.

Sounds like you had a ball, steved.
