Re: FREE HEALTH CARE!
Mother Goose,
What is better care is not defined by what those rich enough to pay for anything out of pocket get. The US may have the best care if you have a hundreds of thousands to spend on it. If not you best pray you happen to have an insurance policy & that they wont deny coverage the moment you need it. There is no way to know if they will do that or not before you need them. Lot's of people get bankrupt due to health care costs in the US, that does not happen in countries with UHC.
It's nice I guess that people can walk into an ER and get care instead of being kicked out to die on the street. They still get billed for it, and anyone in that position can't pay. Anyone who is poor and trying to save money for anything can not get sick or it will wipe them out, or they can get sick and not go into the ER and hope they will get better own their own.
"Rationing" of health care means that there is a priority system to how the resources are used. All the tests can be gotten fast if you go to a private hospital, which they do have in Europe. Health care resources are limited in the US too, the difference is that the only priority system in use is who has the most money.

The last thing that anyone should ever do is feel ashamed of blacking out. You were trying to get drunk last night and, goddamnit, mission accomplished.

Re: FREE HEALTH CARE!
Yeah I am not reading all this stuff but I think it is ridiculous that the US has higher infant mortality and lower life expectancy than other developed nations when we are the leader in everything else. I think capitalism sometimes ingrains individualism into everyone far too much. We think the NHS in the UK is socialism? Give me a break. I don't know what happens to someone to make them lose compassion for other people. I am pretty pissed at Obama and the Dems for giving up so much. Everything would be better if we lowered our defense budget and focused more on our citizens.

To be fair though, shouting "racist!" has become to the left what "9/11!" was to the right.grippingthewheel wrote:Sidetracked, sorry. As NYDingbat stated in her first post, "9/11". Right then. Carry on.

I'd guess there's probably an equal amount of idiots on both ends of the political spectrum. It's not as obvious though, because the "comically dumb liberal" isn't as much a pop culture archetype as the dumb conservative.grippingthewheel wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pilG7PCV ... r_embedded

9/11 happened in what is essentially NYD's back yard. Her father was a retired NYFD, she grew up with these guys, knew alot of them and went to alot of funerals for fallen firefighters. She has alot of friends in the NYPD, i've met many myself, good guys. I know you may think 9/11 is a knee jerk response for her, but it is perhaps more personal for her than the rest of us that watched it on tv.

Re: FREE HEALTH CARE!
Yeah- the study I linked to earlier showing that nearly half of the uninsured in the US can afford health care but choose not to buy it didn't get any comments, but I think that's pretty a significant chunk of the problem. Whenever people support universal health care they usually have some personal anecdote about their friend who needed some surgery that costs thousands of dollars and put them in debt because they didn't have health insurance. Well of course medical care is expensive. That's the whole reason we secure ourselves by pooling a little of our money every month in an insurance plan. The average American is notoriously bad at saving any money for anything in the future, which is why we have this failing social security program (which is taken from my paychecks but even the government estimates it will be bankrupt long before I ever retire). I just want to know the extent to which people are responsible for themselves, and how much I am responsible for other people's mistakes.Mother Goose wrote:There are many, many people who can afford health insurance that simply choose to not purchase it, simply because they know that if they truly need care, they can walk into an emergency room and get it.

It doesn't get too much more clear-cut racist then actually shouting the n-word at a black congressman.Chimneyfish wrote:To be fair though, shouting "racist!" has become to the left what "9/11!" was to the right.grippingthewheel wrote:Sidetracked, sorry. Like, that IS racism. No ifs, ends or buts.
