Re: Brewing at home
All the time. But I'm pretty spartan in the field, but that's a good way to get experience in my humble opinion. Using next to no costly tools or anything like that. I got no idea of the potency I end up with, but I've become pretty good at estimating according to different kinds of yeast and volume of sugars.
If I'm making something potent and strong, often mead, I go with the yeast and let it decide for itself. I make a simple recipe and add additional honey and herbs to taste as I go and the must ferments. It's ready when it's ready. Some will disagree violently, but this simple, easy and barbaric way of brewing suits my purposes.

Wingman's got it right - ask da Spook if ya want 'shine. Nobody does it better. If it's beer you're after - I can ask a buddy of mine.

Indeed. I have about 1 thimble full left of my jar, which, as you know, is good for at least 3 drinks! It's only taken me, what, 16 months?NYDingbat wrote:Wingman's got it right - ask da Spook if ya want 'shine. Nobody does it better. If it's beer you're after - I can ask a buddy of mine.

Yes sir. I would recommend asking around at your locals and getting someone to help you at first. Helped me out a lot.

Nice, thanks man. I've talked to a few local brewers in the area, my goal is to spend less then $400-500 for a complete kit.Resident Asshole wrote:Yes sir. I would recommend asking around at your locals and getting someone to help you at first. Helped me out a lot.
This is the article that helped me get into the field:

I've bought a kit, playing with it as I speak. Should make for good times. Honey/Cherry/Winter Wheat porter should turn out nicely (and yes, I'm simply trying to combine my favorite Sam Adams brews into one epic beer).

Howtobrew.com
Free and chock full of good info and recipes.
I do it pretty simple too, instead of lauter/sparge, I just put the grain in a big nylon paint strainer bag to steep out the sugars. Works pretty well. Plus, drinking while brewing is basically mandatory.
