We watched this, and oh my, how important is this message? Family is all important. Absolutely. Totally. Completely.
Everthing else withers beside this. Michael and Kay, at the end, were together (in their broken way), because they were family.
And Connie was damn scary, wasn't she?

Re: Godfather trilogy
I see the trilogy as a story of Michael not being capable of doing what his father had done, namely use the criminal enterprise to support the ongoing existence of the family. For Michael it seems backwards. His duties as mafia boss lead him to lose his family. First his sister, then his wife and brother, and finally his daughter. Now I'm not saying that Carlo Rizzi didn't deserve to be killed, but a father (or patriarch) must be able to exercise mercy, and mercy is by definition giving someone better than they deserve.
And the third movie does suck ass.
From what I've observed, convention calls for me to buy this round. What will it be?

Re: Godfather trilogy
Cheers, and welcome. Bourbon'll do.
The baptism scene from the first one has to be one of the finest sequences ever put to film. It's so goddamn menacing.
As far as 3 is concerned, I keep trying to like it, regardless of how awful it is in the context of the other films, but just can't find anything redeeming about it. By that time Pacino had become some weird, shouting caricature of an actor who's only believable as a screaming blind man who drives Ferraris.

You might want to watch at least the first two movies at some point. They're quite good.

Describing the first two Godfather films as "quite good" is kinda like saying Shakespeare was a decent bloke with a pen! They are essential viewing for anyone who wants to be versed in the art and mythology of the American experience.John Barleycorn wrote:You might want to watch at least the first two movies at some point. I'm gettin' another drink. I'm starting to sound all film-student pretentious and shit.

Re: Godfather trilogy
Don't sell yourself short- if the first two Godfather films were ink on canvas, they would be hanging in the Guggenheim, if not the Louvre. The third one would possibly make it to a Holiday Inn's wall.willerror wrote:Describing the first two Godfather films as "quite good" is kinda like saying Shakespeare was a decent bloke with a pen! Re: Godfather trilogy
I remember watching some mafia exposed something or other and some goomba saying, "the Godfather movies showed us how we were supposed to be." High praise from a goomba.

Oh and..... the first Godfather movie is the best movie ever made. Just my opinion which of course overrides yours.
