Well I don't know how the hell you guys afford to drink whiskey over there, I was in Europe for 2 weeks recently and the best deal I got was 5 pounds for a 35ml pour of Famous Grouse (this was a 2-for-1 deal), most places were more like 7 pounds for 25ml of Jameson, a total ripoff IMO.
At my bar you can get 1.5 oz. of Jameson for 5 American, which would be like paying 3.5 pounds for 45ml. How is Jameson more expensive in Europe than here?
Anyway, I did notice that Bulmer's, Strongbow and Kopparbergs were huge over there, so you are right about the cider thing. However, in a lot of places I went, especially "trendy" cities like Dublin, the people drank nasty shit like vodka-red bulls.
Also, I couldn't get a decent micro to save my life, although I like bold, strong beers so that I suppose was the issue because it wasn't that what I drank was bad, it just didn't have a lot of taste.
As for vodka infusions, I had a great one that was infused with whiskey. It's called Ten High.

Muy bien. Between killing my liver and keeping track of a now crawling 6 month old, life is quite busy. Work is all kind of hectic, but I'm glad to be employed. I used to soak dried red chilies in Stoli. I'd wait until they sunk to the bottom of the bottle. Then I'd give it a shake and throw it in the freezer for a month.

Re: Homemade Vodka Infusions
The past few years I've been making a cranberry infusion that's well liked by all who've tasted it.
version 1 was just a punnet of whole cranberries in a mason jar with a a litre of vodka for a month - ok but nothing remarkable.
version 2 I adapted from a recipe on the web that called for roughly equal amounts volume of chopped cranberries, vodka, and simple syrup, I wound up with enough to fill 3x 2 litre mason jars. left these for around 3 months. The result was a bit too sweet for my taste (more like a liquer) but it did taste great with soda ( or tonic) & a couple lime wedges.
version 3 - I reduced the amount of sugar by a half & added some lime zest plus a punnet of raspberries for a bit more tartness. delicous

I have some cucumbers soaking now. How long until it is worth trying?

I have one steeping on the window ledge; a grape, cherry, strawberry, plum combo.

i've found it depends on the material used and how finely it's chopped. i taste a bit after a couple days, and every day thereafter until i get the desired flavor.Jags wrote:I have some cucumbers soaking now. How long until it is worth trying?

I've only ever used fruit. If it's apples or oranges, you need to slice them. For smaller fruits (grapes, cherries, strawberries, other berries, raisins, small plums, etc), I put them in whole after scoring each one several times with a sharp knife. As for time, most recommendations I've seen online call for a minimum of 3-5 days, while the maximum time seems to be quite open for debate. My latest batch went 6 days and is quite good.Wingman wrote:i've found it depends on the material used and how finely it's chopped. i taste a bit after a couple days, and every day thereafter until i get the desired flavor.Jags wrote:I have some cucumbers soaking now. Because it's a country where 16 year old girls like to go out, get drunk, and get their tubes stuffed.Resident Asshole wrote:Wow, always rely on the UK to come of with the fruitiest bullshit. Re: Homemade Vodka Infusions
The UK is contradictory.... go into a real pub and order anything that has any sweetness and even if your a woman youd get beaten...but the town centres are full of half hearted attempts at bars where they love to hide the taste of booze behind a wall of sugar. That and starting to drink at 16 is classed as waiting til your old enough (most people starting at 12-13 that I know) and the young tend to be the purveyors of whats popular.
But really the silent real drinkers here tend to stick to real drinks.

Drunk? I'm not drunk! You wouldn't dare accuse me of that if I was s0ber!

THIS^^.
Re: Homemade Vodka Infusions
The only sweetness I like when I'm drinking is my wife.
I tried the cucumber vodka. It's got a very pronounced cucumber flavor but a little bit bitter. These were from a garden so maybe not quite enough time on the vine.
