there is something special about being outdoors. The same way food tastes better outside

Re: Sunday's Ice Fishing Report
I am quite envious, your drink situation not withstanding.
I really, really want to try ice-fishing.
Good to hear that you are having a good day, Smatter. Keep on, keeping on and have a great day. And keep those reports about the glories of ice-fishing coming in. Perhaps next time you could take some pictures and upload a few images of your ice-bound adventures.

I agree with P. I've always wanted to give ice fishing a try. It almost never gets cold enough long enough around here. Though this year it has.
I need to look into this more in my area.

Never understood ice fishing myself. I did once though drag a sofa in middle of a frozen lake and down some vodka by myself. Good times.

I think you've discovered the reason for ice fishing. It's less about catching fish than solitude with your thoughts, your booze and Ma Nature.Bur wrote:Never understood ice fishing myself. I did once though drag a sofa in middle of a frozen lake and down some vodka by myself. Good times.

Re: Sunday's Ice Fishing Report
It's been cold as a witch's tit in a brass bra here lately, or at least cold enough to send old boy's growler gone slushy. We stock rum in the sled and keep the wax worms under our armpits at -20F. The jumbo perch have been fine with nice Waldos toward the evening in average of 14-18 inches on the night bite. A guy named "Anders" came over with a bottle of VSOP and puked on the snow, and we drank again.
Drinking is the official sport of ice fishing.

First Ice
On November 20th. Incredible.
Headed out with the Shnopps, Lite beer and Bourbon flasks as well as the old fashioned Coleman gas lanterns that hiss as they burn 'cause Stubb says that calls the fish in.
An inch thick is my minimum, expecting water out and over the hole, if that rises over an inch it's a delicate skedaddle back to shore!

Re: First Ice
One inch?!
Man, I get nervous if the running water beneath that Penoby gets less than a foot of clear hard ice.
Then again, that there is not still water.
Anyways, you have some guts there, man
I take it that you don't yard out a shack. You got your seat and an ice chest, huh, bracing against the wind

Please take care, good Smatter. We don't want your inch of ice to take a foot.mistah willies wrote:One inch?!

Re: First Ice
An inch seems sketchy to me, but we don't usually get long enough cold snaps here in PA for ice fishing. That being said I would think three inches or so would be good enough.

Re: First Ice
There was at least 2" but colder than hell. A lot of cracking and creaking.
Just me, Stub and some other guy out, we made sure we wouldn't be the last off but it's good to go with 8 fat Perch apiece and probably better tonight. Took us more time to clean 'em than catch 'em.
Too busy and not enough company for the 2 shot / 2 beer per half hour routine.
I just bring a pole, a drill and a pail, and keep my back to the wind. Also have a thin line for shore attachment but didn't use it this time.
