Re: On the Blackout - How (or should?) you avoid it
I am finding that I am blacking out a bit more than I used to but I ascribe part of that to age: I am headed down the other side of middle age and have seen and mostly done it all. So new experiences do not really exist for me in the day to day...I have to seek them out.
THAT said: I also black out at oddly unexpected and decidedly not mundane times, like while preparing the final course and dessert at a party we were hosting that involved an "Iron Chef" like cooking challenge and a paired signature cocktail with each dish. I am told that my maple-bourbon bread pudding was fucking divine, although my whipped cream could have been sweeter. So yeah, one minute I'm cooking for 20 or 25 of our friends then the next thing I know, I woke up naked and there's a chicken in the bedroom. No joke. We do raise chickens, but still...odd. Stumbling around that morning, I kept finding my discarded clothing around the house. I am presuming the party broke up as I began to disrobe, but I'm not sure.
Interestingly, blurry snapshots kept developing as the day wore on: a wobbly good night to one of our friends; sitting pantsless on the couch with Mrs Absinthe 2.0 and two of our friends; showing off our newly hatched chicks. But nothing concrete enough to call a "memory".
I have noticed that if I drink more, or more quickly, than usual, I go from "tipsy" to "Memento". If I forget what I am doing and pound Steel Reserve like PBR, my brain is shutting off while my body is still running around. If I quaff something sweet, like those quintuple imperial milk stouts or foo-foo crap, I'm checking out....not sure what that's about, but I think the glucose is bringing more permeability to the ol' blood brain barrier.
The things that other people SAY give them blackouts (shots, Jaeger, tequila, etc) generally don't do it to me. Mrs Absinthe 2.0 has seen me drink a pint or so of whiskey as a pregame to a concert, swill several beers at said concert, and then be transformed into a shambling, mumbling, shaggy beast by one Dragon's Milk.
Conversely I would say that the advice that dilettantes give to each other about "session" day drinking, then, is the way to avoid the blackout: every other drink should be water, make sure you have food in your stomach, nurse that cocktail so you are drinking a watery drink more slowly, go for anything that has "spritzer" or "cooler" in the name, wine drinks, low ABV beers, etc. In short, do everything that this board is against.
Shit, even putting a little paper umbrella in your drink will force you to slow down at the risk of a poke in the eye.
Part of the fun of "Memento" was trying to find the storyline, the timeline, the mystery of the history. Same with a blackout.

Maybe you guys should wear body cams the next time you think you might black out and then post snippets of the best parts here. Now that would be hilarious!

I don`t understand the question. Why avoid?
Blackouts are there to keep you sane!
They happen. I wouldn`t put it on any special drinking-regime.
There are like a million things factoring in. I wont list them all.
Also I think they are fun. Especially when little somethings are coming back and your wasted brain tries it`s best to put little snippets together into a coherent image.

Don't misunderstand: I am also pro-blackout.
Young Master Brandonman seemed ambivalent, and I was mockingly suggesting he follow the volumetric drinking tips of amateurs and dilettantes.
And as regards the umbrella, vis a vis the brain having something to hold onto: my first point in this thread was that something ordinary will not trigger the pickled brain to recall things but some extraordinary or unusual will.

So if I'm reading this right you're saying "Blackout and be extraordinary."Absinthe Of Malice wrote: ↑Fri May 11, 2018 11:31 amDon't misunderstand: I am also pro-blackout.
