ROFLMAO!!!
The barkeep at Tommy's Joynt in San Francisco sold my drunk and progressively more angry friend four, count 'em, four rounds before I explained it to him. I'm convinced if I wasn't there he'd be there to this day trying to figure it out.

Wow, I just figured it out. Took about 10 minutes, but I'm reviving this thread because I feel proud of myself!

Re: best sign in a bar
I once played a night in a bar, @ 1986, in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada) as a fill-in between engagements. The owner/bartender was a semi-drunk Anglo-Canadian, but most of the patrons were drunk native Indians.
There was a charming sign, bolted to the wall, directly behind and above where I sat at the piano:
No Singing
No Dancing
No Requests
No Tipping
---by order of
The Management
I've often wondered what the regular piano player (who I never met) thought about that sign -- especially the No Tipping part.

Can anyone verify this, or is my memory shot? I bought a round of "Old Style" for 10 friends and I believe that grand total was $7!!!
Research indicates that the tavern reopened in a more gentrified way. This is apparently a new interior sign.

I remember this place from 1995, when I used to hang in Chicago! I don't recall the neon sign, but the outside window you see above
Article on the place (link below-where I stole the above pic) sez: "Amongst the tables, and perched under an unlit neon "Alcohol Abuse Center" sign, mounted prominently on the ornate, cream-painted tin western wall, used to be a '97 Golden Tee machine that was actually turned off and serving as an ashtray rest."
I took a pic of me infront of the window with scraggly 2 week old beard and Hawaiian shirt (need to digitize those old bar photos!)

Well, I just noticed I'm familiar with another dive mentioned here (wish I was familiar with the one in Costa Rica!)gamediva2112 wrote:(corrections wanted if I have any of these names wrong)

"WE ONLY LOOK EXPENSIVE"
It is now called Bert's Tavern, in Yates Center. They stll have the huge "Expensive" signage.. ....AT 7:35 of this video I shot of Yates Center, you can see Bert's in the distance, but can't read the signs due to YouTube's fuzzy compression:

at at 1:49 mark of the above video you can see the pink liquor store in town, before they did this hilarious paint job for New Year's this year:

Re: best sign in a bar
Well, I'm actually in Yates Center now and I took picture of that sign at Bert's:
barkeep said Bert's dates from early 1950s (I'm surprised this county woulda allowed it back then). Present owner added the "We only look expensive" signage when he took it over about 13 years ago. I'm told place hasn't changed since the 50s--but that would be expected here parts. Yates Center (Woodson county's seat and biggest town) is bit over hour east of Wichita, but many more years away. Population was much more in 50s. Been on decline since then. Only place in town that served distilled spirits (legally) just went outta business
Here is Bert's current bumper sticker and side shot of the place, along side Hwy 75:

Re: best sign in a bar
It is neither inside nor at a bar. It is outside of a liquor store. A fine establishment in Cheyenne, WY, called DT's.
And it is a pink elephant with a motorized trunk.
Couldn't find an online image with the neon, so here's a shot in daylight:

Re: best sign in a bar
I have one hanging up in my bar that says "danger, men drinking."
Beer's just being social. Whiskey's drinkin'.
